Want to get more done in a shorter amount of time? Are you interested in increasing your daily productivity? What if I told you that you could do all of this and it would take you less than 10 minutes a day? Is that something you might be interested in?
Lucky for you, I have the SOLUTION! It's called Daily Planning, and it's so easy and effective that you'll be kicking yourself because you didn't start this amazing practice sooner!
Daily Planning is easy. It's as simple as making a list of what you would like to accomplish and get done for your day ahead of time.
How will Daily Planning save me time?
In Brian Tracy's book "Eat That Frog," he talks about how 1 minute of planning saves you 12 minutes in execution. That means 10 minutes of simple and easy planning will save you 2 hours of time! That can really add up, fast. Imagine if you had two extra hours a day, what would you do? Spend more time with your kids? Work on that art-project you've been putting off? Or maybe just spend more time on the couch, chilling out and watching Netflix? No matter what you would choose to do, you have to agree that having 2 extra hours a day would be pretty sweet!
Most of us waste a lot of time thinking about what to do next. We finish our work assignment, our homework for that anatomy class, or finish cleaning the garage, pause and think... "so what's next?" Those little moments of time, slowly add up, and before you know it, you just wasted 45 minutes of your day thinking about what you should be doing, instead of actually doing it! With Daily Planning, you completely remove that lag time, because you already have planned out your day ahead of time. It's as simple as looking at your list and picking the next to-do item.
When's the best time to do your Daily Planning?
There's two option when it comes to planning out your day. You can either do it in the morning, right when you wake up, or the night before, right before you go to sleep. Although you could do it in the morning, planning your day the night before is much more beneficial and productive and here's why.
Obviously, when you do your Daily Planning the night before, you don't have to do it in the morning, which means you waste less time thinking and more time tackling your to-do-list so that you can be the awesome super productive person you know that you could be!
Secondly, by planning your day the night before you go to sleep, you go to bed with your to-do list fresh in your conscious mind. While you're asleep, that to-do list will seep down into your subconscious mind and new ideas will start to stir around and be created. Who knows, you could wake up in the morning with the idea for the next big social media app or how to wow your boss with your morning presentation. Talk about a super-power!
The 80-20 Rule + Your Most Important Tasks
So now you've made your to-do list the night before, and you're ready to call it a night, but wait, you're not quite finished just yet. Have you thought about what tasks are more important and which ones will have a more significant impact on your success?
The 80-20 rule states that 20% of what you do accounts for 80% of your results. What this means is that 2 to 3 tasks on your to-do list hold much more weight than the others. It's up to you to decide what these tasks are and why they're far more impactful than the others.
The next goal of yours should be accomplishing these critical tasks as early as possible. The reason for this is two-fold. When you get into the habit of finishing your hardest tasks first, it becomes easier and easier for you to do work like this in the future. Secondly, by getting these tasks out of the way early, you're ensuring that no matter what you do for the rest of your day, whether that be heading to happy hour with your buds or chatting on the phone for hours with your sorority sister from college, the day can still be considered productive.
So there you have it! By now you should be thoroughly convinced that Daily Planning can help increase your productivity and save you time, so that you can do more of the things you love. If you're still not convinced that Daily Planning is awesome, I suggest that you grab a copy of Brian Tracy's book "Eat That Frog" which gives 21 tips on how you can conquer procrastination and start living the life of your dreams.
